After Thought, 2023
After Thought explores rituals of remembrance, those acts we perform in honour of the past. The installation examines the ways we can transform our cherished memories either through our own direct actions or by the passage of time. Wax, organic matter, and incense are layered overtop images of family members who have passed. Their accumulation over the image plane embody our ceremonial acts, the leavings of ritual. Burnt boxes allude to cultural customs that strive to contain, to cherish, and to preserve. Yet, this is troubled by the progression of occlusion throughout the installation. Images recede from view, leaving only the evidence that they were, at some point, a part of someone's remembering.
